Exchange Club of Aurora- Friend of Children 2008

April is Child Abuse Prevention month and to recognize this, the Exchange Club of Aurora hosted it’s 7th annual Friend of Children Awards luncheon at Gaslite Manor on April 15, 2008.

The Friend of Children Award pays tribute to individuals that go “the extra mile”, through services and/or advocacy, to help children that are at-risk while working to improve the lives and well-being of children.

This year’s recipient was: Laura Ramirez-Nunez of Communities and Schools (CIS).  Denise Elsbree of Communities and Schools nominated Laura.  Clayton Muhammad, Director of Community Relations and Chief Spokesman at East Aurora School district gave a moving keynote address and is guided by the adage, “If you change your mind, you change your life.”  Laura Ramirez-Nunez manages referrals for over 200 students and is persistent in her pursuit of additional mental health and counseling resources for the students.  Laura reaches out to needy children and their families during the holiday season.  She has managed a gift giving program between local businesses and the needy children.  She is a strong advocate for children going above and beyond the usual scope.

We cannot avoid the serious problem of child abuse and neglect in Illinois.  In 2007 there were well over 28,000 indicated cases of abuse and neglect.  In the last 8 years, 582 children have died from abuse and neglect.

ACE Awards and Many Young Voices

Chairs: Jim James & Rosalie Cassidy

May 6, 2008

Accepting the Challenge of Excellence

The Ace Award recognizes students who have overcome a significant challenge to earn a high school diploma.  The Exchange Club of Aurora is proud to honor six students this year; Oscar Aguilera, Erika Alcala, Ashley Keith, Rodrigo Madrigal, JaCoure Miller and Jasmine Muñoz.  All six students were awarded a $1,000 scholarship.  Dr. Clem Mejia, former Regional Superintendent of Kane County Schools presented the keynote address.

Many Young Voices Award

Many Young Voices is a program designed to allow students, without assessment or judgment, a place to explore their ideas about the world around them   Within the safety of the parameters of dialogue instead of debate, students have an opportunity to find and discover their voice.  For many students, this experience serves as both a window into understanding others by listening, empathizing and humanizing, as well as a mirror to see him or herself with more clarity and compassion.  This year Lynette M. Montañez was awarded a $1,000 Many Young Voices award scholarship.

Did you know that, the average cost of a year's tuition, room and board, and fees at a public university last year was $8,470 (source: the College Board). Many experts predict that the cost of public university will also increase at a rate of about 5% per year over the next decade.

Unity of Service

Exchange, America’s Service Club, is a group of men and women working together to make communities better places to live through programs of service in Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities, and its national program– The Prevention of Child Abuse.

The Exchange Club of Aurora was established in 1937. Its members are professional men and women from or working in the greater Aurora area. Our interpretation of “exchange” is the giving of self for the privilege of serving others; of parting with selfishness and receiving in return the satisfaction of discharging our duty to our fellowman, to our community and to our nation.
