Exchange Club of Aurora- Friend of Children 2009

April is Child Abuse Prevention month and to recognize this, the Exchange Club of Aurora hosted its 8th annual Friend of Children Awards luncheon at Provena Fox Knoll on April 14, 2009.

The Friend of Children Award pays tribute to individuals that go “the extra mile”, through services and/or advocacy, to help children that are at-risk while working to improve the lives and well-being of children.

This year’s recipient was: Janet Momper of The Friends of Aurora’s After-School Program at McCleery School in Aurora.  Theresa Shoemaker of Communities and Schools nominated Janet.  Chuck West, Kane County Coroner, was the keynote speaker and provided insight into the child abuse and neglect cases here in Kane County.   Janet Momper was recognized for her dedication and passion for at-risk youth.  She has taken “countless families” under her wing, providing them with extra reading tutoring, donating materials, and arranging mentors that will have long term relationships with students.  At Christmastime, she volunteers her time to help provide new bikes for at-risk youth.  Cherri Esposito, Principal at McCleery Elementary School says that “As a philanthropist in the truest sense, Mrs. Janet  Momper  has dedicated her life to improving this community by loving its youth”.

Unity of Service

Exchange, America’s Service Club, is a group of men and women working together to make communities better places to live through programs of service in Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities, and its national program– The Prevention of Child Abuse.

The Exchange Club of Aurora was established in 1937. Its members are professional men and women from or working in the greater Aurora area. Our interpretation of “exchange” is the giving of self for the privilege of serving others; of parting with selfishness and receiving in return the satisfaction of discharging our duty to our fellowman, to our community and to our nation.
